Handfasting is an ancient pagan, Celtic and Gypsy custom that
involves two lovers making their vows together and celebrating
their union.
It is different in so far as marriage in
that the lovers are only making a commitment for a year and a
day.
13 lunar months plus one day 365 days.
After this time the couple are free to renegotiate
the relationship with one another and can either continue there
relationship or talk about what needs to be addressed to resolve
issues.
If things haven’t worked out for the
best, then they are free walk their separate ways.
The handfasting ceremony can be tailor made
to suit your own requirements and does not follow any rigid doctrine.
For example some people choose to use a ribbon
that all of their witnesses have signed. This is then tied around
the wrist of the two people making there union and sanctifies
there commitment.
There can be an exchange of rings.
A special door made of flowers can be used
for the lovers to jump through together, signifying the start
of a new life together.
A labyrinth can be used as a focal point
for the ceremony, the lovers can walk into the labyrinth together,
embrace in the centre, and then return united as one.
There are many ways to go about handfasting,
but a necessary part is to have a priestess or priest giving or
both giving a heart felt blessing to the couple.
A handfasting is not a legally binding contract,
so it is therefore suitable for couples who feel that their relationship
has nothing to do with the state or the Law or the church.
