The world famous psycadelic yarn art is
full of symbolic imagery, Shamans are portrayed connecting with
gods and gaining power to raise good crops.
These pieces are totally handmade using
natural process involving bees wax and Yarn.
Traditionally the pieces would have been
made as offerings to the gods and then left in the hot sun to
melt and be taken back by nature,
But now indigenous people are supporting
their traditional ways of life with a resurgence in this art form.
The (Cuadro) as they are known to the Mexicans
are all completely unique and are signed by the Artist.
We are working along side the community who
produce this yarn art to help protect there way of living. And
in doing so we hope to bring to the attention the plight of indigenous
peoples around the world. We are therefore dedicated to fair trade.
These pieces are really something special
and are delight for anyone to see. The bright colours attract
the eye and then tell a delightful story revealing hidden motifs
not observed at first glance.
THE TEPEUHANCAN ARTISTS
The tribe inhabit the area known as the Sierra Madre. There are
one small indigenous group who live among the mountains and still
practice the old ways. They are artist of an exceptional standard,
at times working communally as well as alone.
Because of the fine quality of these pieces
it is essential to know how these pieces are made.
To begin the artist selects some timber to use a medium that can
be decorated.
Then bees wax is applied to allow a layer
for the application of the yarn. This layer is then embedded with
the yarns using a special stick and the psycadelic patterns are
woven onto the wooden frame.
All of the pieces have their own story to
tell and of course all the pieces are unique. There is not another
work the same anywhere in the world.
These pieces are rare and exceptional
pieces of work. The are all hand made. Some of the bigger pieces
can take up to a month to complete.
